Guitarist Joseph Spoelstra has been heard in such halls as the historic Wilshire-Ebell Theater and Alfred Newman Hall in Los Angeles, the Guthrie Theater and Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis, and Corbett Auditorium at CCM in Cincinnati. Joseph was featured in a live broadcast on KUSC in Los Angeles performing Dominick Argento's Letters from Composers for voice and guitar. He has given premieres of works by Jeffrey Van, Matthew Brown, and Joshua Clausen, and had the opportunity to perform Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint in an ensemble for Mr. Reich on the occasion of his seventieth birthday celebrations in Los Angeles.
In addition to solo recitals, Joseph is a member of the Minneapolis-based contemporary classical music group, Renegade Ensemble, a group specializing in the performance of works by living composers. He founded The Dream Songs Project, a voice and guitar duo with mezzo soprano Alyssa Anderson. They perform works ranging from the Renaissance lute songs of John Dowland, to the early-Romantic music of Mauro Giuliani, to compositions by 20th Century and contemporary composers. The duo recorded works of Giuliani for voice and guitar which was released in December 2011. More information on upcoming performances can be found on the Concerts page.
Joseph holds his Master of Music from the University of Southern California and his Bachelor of Music from the University of Minnesota, where he was a John D. Chatterton scholar. His primary teachers have been William Kanengiser, founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Jeffrey Van, and Brian Head. He has also studied privately and in masterclasses with Pepe Romero, David Russell, Sharon Isbin, and Scott Tennant.
Joseph is a trained Suzuki guitar teacher who enjoys working with young beginners as well as students of all ages. Based in Madison, WI, he teaches in several Madison area music schools. He currently serves as the Guitar Coordinator for the Suzuki Association of Wisconsin. He can be heard frequently performing in Madison, Minneapolis, and throughout the Midwest.
